Reliable sensors ensure food safety on growing food logistics market
Despite major changes to global business and travel movements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the global food logistics market is growing - and sensors play a vital role to ensure food safety for food on the move.
Prior to a bundle of bananas being stacked in your local supermarket, it has often most been long underway in a complex food system. The food system ranges from production to transportation and distribution and from there to retailers and end consumers.
An increasing number of sensors for food safety
Most food travels by sea in refrigerated containers, and accurate temperature during transportation and storage is key to ensure food safety, whether bananas from the Philippines, apples from New Zealand or bacon from Denmark. Temperature sensors – also called USDA probes – are inserted in the cold or frozen food to monitor and control temperatures during transportation from producer to consumer.
Typically, three sensors are placed in the refrigerated container: one in the container’s front, middle and end. Inserting sensors at three different locations in the container is part of upholding a precise temperature measurement throughout the shipment, ensuring that the product is not exposed to unwanted heat or unstable temperatures, which could impact development of bacteria or similar food safety hazards.
In the first three quarters of 2020, Senmatic has experienced an increase in demand for USDA probes compared to the same time period in 2019.
Besides providing security for food safety for consumers around the globe, using reliable sensors also limits the risk of recalling products during the complex food system – a very costly manoeuvre.
The increase reflects a general growth on the global food logistics market.
