There are several quality management systems that are possible to implement – some of them dependent on the specific industry. The ISO 9000 family of standards is one of the most widely implemented internationally. And the ISO 9001 2015 is one of the central quality management systems at Senmatic.

ISO 9001 2015: The international standard for quality management systems

The ISO 9001 is an international certification that specifies requirements for quality management systems, through which organizations can enable management focus on continuous improvement.

Certified organizations comply with requirements of quality management principles, wise decision-making and sustainable business development.

The certification ensures that quality management systems support the company strategy and that the company is willing and able to handle risks connected to change.

Organizations that are ISO 9001 2015 certified are required to consider and evaluate expectations from all stakeholders. They further need to not only exemplify competence and personal knowledge, but knowledge anchored in the entire organization.

In December 2017, Senmatic became ISO 9001 2015 certified, and is therefore able to demonstrate high-quality management principles and provision of products and services that meet both customer- and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

IATF 16 949: The replacement of TS 16 949

In October 2016, IATF published IATF 16 949, which supersedes and replaces the former TS 16 949.

The TS 16 949 standard is an amendment to ISO 9001 2008 developed for the automotive industry. The standard is applicable for automotive production and relevant service part organizations; however, several industries are inspired by the TS 16 949 principles and tools.

IATF 16 949 aims at continual improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and the reduction of deviation and waste. The goal is to improve quality systems and processes to increase customer satisfaction and to identify errors and risks in the production processes.

IATF 16 949 applies to:

  • Design
  • Development
  • Production
  • Installation
  • Servicing of products.

The requirements and processes from the amendment are intended to be applied throughout the entire supply chain in order to improve all interacting business processes that affect an organization’s quality performance.

Senmatic has adopted several IATF 16 949 principles and tools enabling Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and risk assessments. The quality management system enables corrective and preventive measures, and therefore, the focus of IATF 16 949 is not on discovery of errors, but on prevention of errors.

At Senmatic, this means that principles of the IATF 16 949 are also part of important business processes as supplemental requirements – just as principles from the TS 16 949 are and have been.

PPAP: Establishing confidence in suppliers’ production processes

Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) is one of the elements from the IATF 16 949, and it is an essential part of production and quality processes at Senmatic.

PPAP is a structured approval process, where product quality is ensured, which enables a higher level of trust and confidence between customers and suppliers. PPAP creates certainty that suppliers understand production specifications, have controlled processes that ensures product quality, and can deliver products that meet customers’ specific demands.

Thereby, PPAP reduces the risk of production disturbances and costs in relation to quality failure. A constant process of monitoring, analyzing and improving enables the quality assurance, which PPAP creates throughout the production and lifetime of a product.

Failure Mode Effect Analysis (or failure modes) are some of the core elements of PPAP. At Senmatic, both Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA) and Process Failure Mode Effect Analysis (PFMEA) are central to calculate risk and prevent failure throughout the production stages.
